Year Four - Day Forty-Two

Summer's View

Beautiful day today, so we went on the Riverboat Discovery Cruise, which is a paddlewheel boat trip on the Chena River. There was a demonstration by a local bush pilot, who landed and took off from the river right along beside the boat.  Down the river, we stopped for a presentation by Susan Butcher’s daughter with their sled dogs, including some puppies. It was pretty cool to watch, and Sam loved it! Susan Butcher won the famous Iditerod Race at least 4 times, against all odds.

We also stopped at a small island where there was a recreation of an Athabascan village, with demonstrations on fishing and food preparation, examples of cabins and hunting skills, and fine examples of some of their native clothing. Another veteran of the sled dog races gave a presentation with some of her sled dogs, and everyone got to pet and fawn over the dogs. Sam liked that part the best!

We went to The Pump House Restaurant for a fantastic meal. The appetizer of seafood medley for two was really a MEAL for two – wow!
