We spent the day here in Dawson Creek, visiting the little
museum and visitor center to check out some cool history and artifacts. We took the obligatory pictures at the famous
sign, and went downtown to take a pic of the Mile 0 Marker Post, that is the
official beginning of the Alaska Highway. It was built during WWII as a supply
line between the lower 48 and Alaska in case of an invasion.
We also visited the Alaska House, which gave more details
about the Alaska Highway construction. It was quite an ordeal, and an amazing
accomplishment.
Later in the day, which lasts from 4:00 am until about 11:00
pm here, we drove up to check out the Kiskatinaw Bridge. It is a big wooden trestle bridge on the old
section of the Alaska Highway. It is billed as the largest curved wooden bridge
in North America. The road now bypasses the bridge because of weight
restrictions for safety. After walking around and below the bridge, we parked
down the road at the campground there and walked around the river for a while.
Buster and I saw elk tracks, and he disturbed a little nesting wading bird that
was not happy!
